My piece is a reflection of the lessons that I have learned within the past year. I have learned that my emotional states are not defining of myself, my abilities, or my identities. In Cognitive-Behavioral therapy, feelings are often metaphorically compared to clouds. Clouds can represent any one emotion that a person has. Some clouds are gloomy, others are bright. Some are big and some are small. Some move faster than others, while others hang around for longer. Despite the uniqueness of each cloud, they are all temporary in our plane of view. In other words, clouds are meant to be fleeting and nonstationary. Similar to the actions of a cloud, this constant state of change is what is necessary to maintain our own health and emotional regulation. Sometimes we cling to an emotion and manifest it as a permanent part of our reality. When we hang on too tight, we label the world through our small and limited perspective. Attachment will only restrict our personal growth. Learning to accept the spontaneity of emotions will allow us to live more freely and openly within ourselves, and this is the goal that I want to embody for the upcoming year.
Directly relating his concept to my capstone, I am really embodying the motions of clouds. Throughout my process of creating choreography, I tried to reflect on the movement of clouds, and how they respond to a storm or sunny weather. I really did utilize a lot of what I had learned in History of Choreography, and used this prompt (the movement of clouds) to guide me in creating this piece.
